News & Announcements
Swine Flu Preparedness Update Like many colleges and universities across the country, Rider has been experiencing flu-like illness among students, faculty and staff since earlier this semester. The good news is that the numbers are still relatively small. As of October 1, 2009, we know of 32 students and 17 faculty and staff across both campuses who have reported flu-like illness and are recovering at home or have since recovered. Of these, two have been diagnosed with H1N1 (swine flu). Procedures for dealing with these cases have proceeded as planned. Please refer to the September 1, 2009 update for additional information. Unity Days Will Focus on Social Justice
“Social Justice” is the theme for this year’s Unity Days, which will feature a screening of the documentary film War Child and a keynote address by its subject, former Sudanese child soldier and current hip-hop artist Emmanuel Jal. The annual event, held this year from October 14 to 19, brings students, faculty and staff together, and celebrates all the diverse elements that make up the Rider community. Unity Days will also offer workshops that aim to celebrate social change and progress in civil rights and diversity. Playing Through -- Rider Freshman and Former High School Athlete Conquers Cancer
In high school, Amelia Corney was an accomplished student-athlete. In the afternoons, Corney would play golf for the girls’ team at Spring-Ford High School in Montgomery County, Pa. By night, she competed on the USS Tiger Sharks club swim team at The Hill School in nearby Pottstown. It was not until the beginning of her junior year in high school, however, that Corney encountered her toughest competition. In September 2007, at the age of 16, she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Fisher Studies the Past While Focusing on the Future
An avid history buff since grade school, Robert Fisher had been attending lectures at the David Library of the American Revolution in Washington Crossing, Pa., for years before ever enrolling at Rider University. So when the senior History major had the opportunity for an internship at the Library, he grabbed it. Now, though Fisher is fond of studying the past, he already has his sights on the future, including a subject for his doctoral dissertation. Students Get Tips from the Pros at Dinner with the Elite
Rider students with an eye on politics enjoyed a unique opportunity to dine with three local political figures in a friendly, relaxed and conversational setting on October 1 at the Trenton Marriott. Dinner with the Elite: Exploring New Jersey Politics, sponsored by the Center for the Development of Leadership Skills (CDLS) and the Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics, allowed students to learn the ups and downs of governmental affairs from three uniquely different points of view. Egusquiza Counts Her Goals
While her teammates on Rider’s field hockey team were juggling their time between practice and their studies, midfield/forward Virginia Egusquiza faced another challenge during her freshman year on campus. Egusquiza, now a sophomore International Business and Business Administration dual major from Getxo, Spain, had studied Spanish, Basque and English since she was a young student, but she said she still needed to adjust to the English language because of the prevalent American accent.
